The search engine index is nothing more than the continually
updated listing of web pages that the engine keeps in its
data base. It’s how they organize and categorize all
the information they process everyday. It’s kind of
like a high-tech card catalogue at the library.
Search engines use little programs often referred to as "spiders",
"crawlers", or "search bots" to travel
the internet looking for any and all information. They are
constantly on the prowl for new and updated information, and
when they find it they report back to the search engine database
so that the new information or updates can be recorded for
future use.
When the spiders and crawlers gather the information on any
and all pages that they encounter, they send the info to the
engines data base where it is stored to be accessed later
by search engine visitors. Each engine has its own special
formula that it uses to scour the information in its index,
organize it and produce the most relevant results for the
searcher. Knowing this formula for each of the search engines
would make marketing on the internet a breeze, but it would
also get terribly abused by website owners, so the engines
keep them secret. They don’t want to influence what
we say on our pages by letting us know what they want to hear.
This would defeat the purpose of how a search engine is supposed
to work.
These formulas are constantly being changed, updated and
improved for better searching, which makes it even more difficult
to keep up with. But a little good news for you: I am going
to show you how to get pretty darn close to exactly what they
want to hear (I am also going to show you how to keep track
of the updates and changes in the search engines), and this
is going to help you develop tremendous amounts of traffic
for your website!
